To protect and support their colleagues during the COVID-19 outbreak, organisations around the world have shifted quickly to working from home situations. During the press briefing, industry experts discussed how Bentley Systems’ civil design technology is helping the industry to better manage working remotely and to redefine how professionals design and build infrastructure projects.

According to Bentley System’s Francois Valois, vice-resident, civil engineering, and Mo Harmon, director, industry strategy, civil design, a new potential impact on construction productivity is the long term impacts of the coronavirus on how people do work.  Health and Safety on the job site will add a new dimension and construction firms may take new look at what employees are essential on the job site. “Therefore, the construction workers need to change the way we work with new processes enabled by the latest technology,” they agreed.

Penn State Mechanical Engineering to innovate curriculum

In its educational mission to prepare students for an impactful and successful career in a rapidly changing technological landscape, the Penn State Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) has announced several curriculum changes to be implemented in the fall of 2020.   

Eric Marsh, the Glenn Professor of Engineering Education and undergraduate program coordinator, said, “We are advancing the curriculum to make better use of the computing power that only in recent years has caught up with an engineer’s imagination.” 

Two new courses, which have been offered previously as pilot programs, will become required for all mechanical engineering undergraduate students. The first is ME 454, a 3-credit course in mechatronics, which will focus on the integration of mechanical hardware, sensors and actuators and computer control. The second, ME 330, is a 3-credit computer engineering salary and simulation course. While the required number of credits will remain the same, some courses were eliminated and others were tailored to include core topics important to a mechanical engineering degree.

Students and faculty use at-home 3D printers to manufacture visor support pieces for frontline workers

“Need your help!” The email subject line caught Anthony Tkalec’s attention right away.

Tkalec is a computer engineering student at Concordia. He didn’t hesitate when Wael Saleh, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering (MIAE), put out the call for anyone with a 3D printer to manufacture the support pieces for protective visors used by frontline workers at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM).

“When you see that people are dying all around the world, you want to do anything you can,” computer engineering definition. And so he immediately moved his 3D printer to his parent’s garage in the Montreal West Island municipality of Dollard-des-Ormeaux and got to work.

In the week that followed, he made 45 of the flexible support pieces that attach transparent visors to people’s heads.

Academic All-State 2020: Regional standouts from central Iowa

Next year I intend to study engineering at a four year university. I am currently deciding between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Alabama. My ultimate goal after college is to become a civil engineer and, after gaining some work experience, transition into forensic engineering. Throughout school, I have had a gift for math and an interest in forensic science. This being said, Forensic engineering seems like the best of both worlds. It is the perfect way to connect my talent for math with my interest in forensic science. It would allow me to impact people's lives a way that is behind the scenes and tailored toward my strengths and interests. With the world constantly advancing, engineering of any kind is an expanding and relevant field.


What challenges have shaped you, and how? My biggest obstacle has been myself. I hold myself extremely high standards and I am motivated to reach them. I am no doubt a perfectionist. My perfectionist tendencies have caused me undue stress and many late nights. As high school has progressed, I have realized that yes, grades are important, but they are not everything. My senior year especially, as the thought of moving away from my hometown and my friends looms over me, I have realized that sometimes stepping back and allowing myself to have the typical high school experience is also important. I believe that I will always be my own biggest critic, but as long as I am still able to enjoy myself along the way, I look at this quality as an asset rather than an obstacle, as it has helped me to stay focused, computer science degree jobs.

How do you handle stress and maintain a work-life balance right now?

I find myself going on a lot of walks right now! I live in Arizona so the weather is beautiful and it’s really helpful for me to get out of the house and breathe some fresh air. Even a 10-minute walk relaxes me and helps me focus more on work when I get back!

Do you have any tips for studying or working from home? 

Since studying at home gets pretty boring really fast, I’ve been supplementing my normal study techniques with a lot of online videos and tutorials. I’m a really big fan of CrashCourse on YouTube because their videos are short and fun to watch. I also host a lot of video conferencing study sessions with friends and classmates so that it feels like we are studying at the school library together.

How do you maintain community with your fellow SWE members, section, or affiliate?

Video conferences! Every night my what can you do with a computer science degree section hosts a Zoom meeting to do yoga together, and then a lot of us study together after. I love this chance to workout with everyone and see their faces during yoga!

UN telecommunications agency launches global platform to fortify countries' networks

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), an agency of the United Nations, has today announced the launch of a ‘global platform’ to help protect telecommunication networks under strain due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao said in a statement that the Global Network Resiliency Platform will assist governments and the private sector in ensuring that networks are kept resilient and telecommunication services are available to all, as well as inform consumers on responsible network usage.

The platform set out by the computer engineering salary aims to assist policy-makers, regulators and telecommunication companies by sharing ‘best practices and initiatives put in place during the COVID-19 crisis'. “Never before have telecommunication networks been so vital to our health and safety, and to keep our economy and society working, as during the COVID-19 crisis we are living through today,” says Zhao.

“As a result, I have instructed my team to leverage without any delay ITU's existing regulatory and policy-maker platform to help countries and industry cope with the increasing stress being put on global networks.” The Secretary-General says the platform will provide countries struggling to find appropriate solutions with information and expertise on how to cope with the stresses faced by their infrastructure.

IDC forecasts flat telecom spending this year

Research firm IDC predicts that telecommunications services spending will be about the same as it was last year, due to the mixed impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

IDC expects telecommunication services spending to hit $1.6 billion in 2020, which is nearly flat compared to last year. The outlook could surely be worse, and the telecom segment may get off lightly compared to more hard-hit sectors such as travel and consumer retail.

In terms of direct impact from the what jobs can you get with a computer science degree pandemic, IDC said that the industry is seeing some increase in use of services due to national lock-downs, but that doesn’t necessarily equate to an increase in revenues for service providers.

“On the positive side, IDC has observed increased use of telecom services due either to nationwide lockdown or work-from-home policies that many companies have implemented for their employees to follow,” the firm reported. “However, this doesn’t directly translate into a surge in telecom spending due to many households having unlimited voice calls and unlimited Internet services.” On the commercial telecom services side, IDC added, spending will be inhibited due to the pandemic’s economic impacts across various industries, with businesses either facing temporary shutdowns or being closed altogether.

In the second half of 2020, the firm added, the reduction in GDP growth will impact the market, as will the “continued transition to IP and cloud services with lower ARPU.” When it comes to mobile services specifically, IDC said that there will be negative impacts such as slower net additions, because retail outlets are closed and that makes it more difficult to activate new devices and plans for customers.

Booming technology, telecom sector

Qatar’s vibrant Information and Technology (IT) sector is booming driven by consistent rise in users and quality services by network providers.  The level of satisfaction among users is also high due to consumer centric services provided by the telecom companies. Adoption of new technology in Qatar is also high as the use of Internet and new devices has increased significantly over the last 10 years.

According to a report released last month by the Planning and Statistics Authority, the number of computer and Internet users in Qatar has increased sharply.  The annual growth rate for computer and Internet users in the period (2009-2018) was 9.9 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively.

The number of computer users among the population in the age group (four years and above) reached 2.2 million people in 2018, compared to 846,000 people in 2009; showing an annual growth rate of 9.9 percent during 2009-2018.

As per the report, the percentage of computer users among the population in the age group (four years and above) represents 82.7 percent of total population in this age group in 2018. The indicator is likely to rise in coming years due to high level of awareness among citizens and expatriates in Qatar. Applications: Combining the old with the new

Legacy applications are still extremely valuable to organisations, as they tend to offer the kind of security, reliability and resilience required. Industrial Scientific names computer of engineering

Pittsburgh-based Industrial Scientific Corp. named Saldy Antony vice president of engineering, according to a news release. 

Antony previously served as vice president of engineering and product at Petcube, and he has also held roles at Dolby, Amazon and Netflix.

Why Education Is a ‘Wicked Problem’ for Learning Engineers to Solve

Ashok Goel has a vision for the future of education. The professor of computer science and cognitive science at Georgia Institute of Technology believes every student and researcher should have access to artificially intelligent assistants that not only help them study facts and figures, but also collaborate more closely with other humans.

Goel has already helped to build such tools for use in his own classroom and worldwide through collaborations with the Smithsonian Institution. He hopes AI bots—such as his most well-known, a virtual teaching assistant named Jill Watson—may help to ease the entrenched tensions that make education such a “wicked problem” to solve.

Digital Platform Helps Interdisciplinary Teams Form for Senior Projects and Theses

A collaboration between students and faculty in engineering, business and entrepreneurship has given rise to a digital platform that allows students from all three areas to form interdisciplinary teams for senior projects, entrepreneurial ventures and honors theses.

The College of Engineering, the Walton College of Business and the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation have partnered to host an online mixer aimed at connecting students from across disciplines as they approach their senior-year capstone projects and innovation-based honors theses. Beginning April 2, students will be able to sign up on the platform, called CoFinder, to pitch their project idea to a network of other students from different areas, with the goal of forming a design project team. Those teams will engage in a year-long capstone or thesis project for the 2020-21school year.

These connections would typically be made at an in-person mixer on campus, but because in-person activities around the world have been curtailed in response to the computer engineer vs computer science, this platform will allow students to foster interdisciplinary connections safely from anywhere.

Robert Saunders, assistant department head of electrical engineering, is one of the organizers of the digital effort. He said senior projects are a critical part of a student's academic journey, but forming an effective interdisciplinary team can pose a challenge.

"Many students dream of having a team to solve a problem, push an idea, product or service to realization during their senior year," he said." But, they don't know how to get in touch with other students who have the business/practicum/social/technical knowledge to realize these dreams. Now, more than ever, it is important that we provide the means and atmosphere that allows our students to come together to achieve their goals and dream."

The collaboration platform was developed by two students in the College of Engineering's Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering — Canon Reeves, founder of More Technologies, and Kyle Sadler, student director of the University of Arkansas Startup Village.
