Humanitarian Engineering Organizations Develop a Better Global Future

Humanitarian efforts are always needed. In the midst of a pandemic, they may be more at the forefront of our minds. What work is being done and to what effect? What do we still need to do? Humanitarian engineering, as defined by the School of Engineering Education at Purdue University, utilizes the “skill and capabilities of engineering theory and practice toward aiding the greater good of humanity.”

Humanitarian engineers focus on developing solutions to issues including medical and disaster relief, global outreach, human displacement and safety, food security, and economic development. Organizations such as Doctors Without Borders are well known, but the engineering world has its parallel — Engineers Without Borders — as well as a multitude of other organizations promoting humanitarian engineering within the United States and globally. Often these organizations find members by opening chapters on college campuses. Purdue is not the only university with a dedicated humanitarian engineering focus or department — and some may also have chapters within other computer science vs information technology. So what organizations should you look for, and what is it like to be involved?
